Introduction

Planning a wedding is an exciting journey filled with love, joy, and anticipation. However, it’s also a time when financial decisions need to be made. Creating a well-thought-out wedding budget is crucial to ensure that your special day is everything you’ve dreamed of while keeping your finances in check. In this guide, we will explore the key elements to include in your wedding budget, helping you navigate the planning process with confidence and peace of mind.

Wedding Planner

I know some of you may not think this one’s essential, but hear me out here. As I mentioned last week in Where Do I Start with Wedding Planning?, if you try to plan without assistance, it may cause you to spend too much on some areas (signing up for unnecessary services). You also might neglect other items that you really do need.  Your budget needs to be built around your wedding vision, and it can help to have a neutral third party when fleshing that out. By the way, there will be more on the wedding vision in next week’s post, so stay tuned! A wedding planner will help you maximize your budget. Also, there’s just no substitute for peace of mind! A professional planner will ensure all the details are taken care of.

Your wedding venue

Choosing the perfect venue will bring your wedding vision to life! This choice will also determine how much, or how little, you need to spend on decor and florals. A beautiful, all-inclusive venue will minimize your spending on aesthetic elements. On the other hand, a “blank slate” venue will require you to spend a lot more to create the atmosphere you want. Consider factors such as location, capacity, and proximity to accommodations for your guests. If you haven’t already downloaded my guide Read This Before Booking Your Wedding Venue, make sure you do so! It has a wealth of information.

Wedding Catering and Bar

What type of cuisine are the two of you looking for on your big day? This plays a large role in fulfilling your wedding vision too. If you and your honey are both foodies and want several gourmet options, this may end up being a significant portion of your wedding budget. On the other hand, if you’re planning a more casual get-together, your options might be more affordable. Your venue may have specific caterers that they require you to work with, so this needs to be taken care of after you’ve chosen your venue. Research multiple catering options and compare prices to find the best fit for your budget.

Wedding Attire and Accessories

Your wedding attire plays a significant role in your special day – exactly how much of a role, of course, is entirely up to you. If your look on your wedding day is very important to you, you may wish to increase this portion of the budget accordingly. In addition to your wedding dress and/or suit/tux, you will want to set aside money for accessories such as shoes, jewelry, and veil. Remember to include costs for alterations and any necessary grooming services, namely hair and makeup. These artists are booking up very early these days, so don’t wait to make that choice!

Wedding Photography and Videography

Capturing the precious moments of your wedding day is priceless. Allocate plenty  of your budget professional photographer(s) and a videographer who can beautifully document your special day. There is so much to consider when booking these services. Photography now comes in a few “flavors”: true-to-life color, light and airy, or a dark and moody vibe. Photographers tend to specialize in one of these types, so you’ll want to make this decision before you even start looking. Once you’ve chosen which of these types fit your own style, research different packages, compare prices, and review their portfolios to find a talented team that aligns with your vision. Talk with your planner before you book; this is one spending category in which many couples end up booking for less time than they actually need.

Your Wedding Decorations and Florals

Create that magical ambiance by allocating part of your budget to decorations (rentals) and flowers. Consider the theme and style of your wedding to select floral arrangements, centerpieces, and other decor elements that will accent your other choices. Choose flower varieties that are in season to get the most for your floral budget, and explore cost-effective alternatives for a stunning yet affordable setup. Many florists are willing to work with you so that ceremony items can be repurposed in your cocktail hour or wedding reception, which may save you money.

Entertainment and Music

Entertainment will make or break your wedding celebration! First,  decide whether a band or a DJ will best bring your vision to life. Allocate a portion of your budget for live music or a DJs, and if your budget allows, consider additional forms of entertainment for your cocktail hour or reception that will keep your guests entertained and create a lively atmosphere. Buttercup Celebrations has a list of great bands in this region, as well as talented local DJs that can get and keep a party going. Research local talent, read reviews, and attend live performances to ensure you choose the right entertainment for your special day.

Stationery and Invitations

Impress your guests from the start by allocating a portion of your budget for high-quality stationery and invitations. From save-the-date cards to wedding invitations and thank-you notes, these details set the tone for your wedding and leave a lasting impression. Consider working with a professional designer, or explore DIY options to find the perfect balance between quality and cost. Don’t forget to save some money in this category for day-of-wedding items such as programs, a seating chart, and signage.

Conclusion

Planning a wedding is an exciting and memorable experience, but it can also be overwhelming, especially when it comes to managing your budget. By allocating funds to the key elements mentioned above, your planner will help you ensure that your wedding day is everything you’ve envisioned while remaining within your financial comfort zone. Remember, flexibility and creativity can go a long way in making your dream wedding a reality.
